What happens if you try to dye dirty hair?

Anything horrific?
Because I’m trying to dye it quite a similar colour, so if it’s just the colour being different in different places it’s not that big of a problem

I find it’s actually better to dye dirty hair — gives the dye something to stick to, so it turns out less patchy and it’s less damaging.
